Food & Drink Itinerary
The secret ingredient to the perfect break is enjoying great food and drink, and you’ll be spoilt for choice with what’s on the menu in Durham.
Catch it, cook it, eat it!
You can’t get much fresher than catching you own fish, and with Northumbrian Water you can have a real lake to plate experience with their ‘try it’ fishing sessions and lessons at Derwent Reservoir in the Durham Dales. Experienced coaches are on hand to take you through each stage enabling you to catch your own fish and take it home to enjoy for supper!
A taste of the past at Beamish Museum
For a real taste of the past, visit Beamish – The Living Museum of the North where you can sample traditional recipes like singin’ hinnies, stotties and oat cakes cooked by costumed folk on coal-fired ranges in homes around the site. Visit Herron’s Bakery, the Jubilee Sweetshop or relax in the Sun Inn with a pint of real ale. And when it’s time for lunch, don’t miss Davy’s Fried Fish Shop for traditional fish and chips cooked in beef dripping.
Farm Shops and Farmers Markets
Get a feel for Durham’s local produce by visiting one of the many farm shops around the county, or try and buy at farmers’ markets taking place regularly. From the finest meats to delicious cheeses and from freshly-baked breads to seasonal vegetables, it’s all readily available at Durham’s farmers markets or farm shops dotted around the county.
